Expert Insight Session – Promoting Philanthropy – 26 June 2024

The next in our popular Expert Insight Sessions series will take place on Wednesday 26 June from 14:30 to 15:30.

Cathy Pharoah will present the findings of her recent work on scoping the philanthropy of high-net-worth donors and the challenges for policy and fundraising development where market information is weak.

Cathy Pharoah is Visiting Professor of Charity Funding at Bayes Business School. She is an expert on non-profit sector funding and its measurement, and has carried out many studies on topics related to giving and fundraising, philanthropy, charity income, and social enterprise. Most recent work focuses on high net worth giving. She is currently a trustee of the Barrow Cadbury Trust. 

Philip Spedding will discuss the following points:

  • The sector’s need for major gifts (rebuilding reserves, capital campaigns etc)
  • Changing priorities in the donor community
  • Emerging effects of non-domiciled tax changes
  • Ethics challenges

Philip Spedding is currently the Head of Philanthropy at Royal Albert Hall and is shortly to become the CEO at the Society of Genealogists. He has worked in cultural organisations ranging from Tate and the British Library to the Almeida Theatre and the London Library. For 16 years he was at Arts & Business, eventually becoming its Director. He has close to 30 years of experience as a fundraiser and has spoken globally on the development of arts and private sector partnerships across the UK and internationally.

Shivani Menon will present the Onward Report with a specific focus on the report sections that analyse the best ways Gift Aid should be reformed and why Gift Aid is important for promoting philanthropy and ‘Giving Back Better’. 

Shivani H Menon is a Senior Researcher at the think tank Onward. She leads Onward’s work on philanthropy and is the author of the report ‘Giving Back Better.’ She has worked on different economic policies, including apprenticeships, local regeneration, and housing.
